AI Copywriting

Wednesday 18 January 2023

Artificial Intelligence copywriting has been making waves recently with the launch of AI writing tools like OpenAI's ChatGPT.

I've started to see reports of freelance copywriters using AI to generate pages of content, instead of researching and writing them from scratch.

While I would like to stress that I'm not referring to anyone in particular, or to any specific AI copywriting app/tool (ChatGPT is just an example of the technology), I would like to address this topic just in terms of my own freelance writing services.

I do not use AI to generate content. Everything I produce for my clients is researched and written from scratch, by me. I don't outsource to other writers and I don't use any kind of content generating tools.

There's a good possibility that AI will eventually become sophisticated enough to generate copy on a par with most human writers, but by definition its output is derivative - AI will never be able to offer true human creativity and originality.

Testing for AI Content

I've also seen tools start to emerge that claim to test for AI-generated content, and while some of these have been programmed with care and attention, they're also not foolproof.

I do not use AI to generate content. If you run any of my content through an AI checker and it comes back with a high percentage of 'AI content', it's a false positive. (I think this is very unlikely to happen, but I wanted to address it here just in case.)

Should this ever become an issue, please just let me know. I can (within reason) edit content if you're not happy with the wording - just as I do if clients ask me to check my content with Grammarly, Hemingway or verify its uniqueness using a Plagiarism Checker tool prior to delivery.

The Bottom Line

I take pride in my work, and that means every sentence I write is original content and is only ever written by me. No outsourcing and no AI.

(The only exceptions to this are, for example, direct quotations, job titles, technical terms and so on, where the wording needs to be precise and unchanged from the source material.)

You should be able to expect this as a bare minimum from any decent freelance writer - but I wanted to make clear that this is how I operate in 100% of cases, so you can have total confidence when hiring me.
