How often should I update my website?

Monday 13 November 2023

Updating your website can feel like a chore, which is why it's so important to have a good cheap content writer available to take care of the leg work.

But whether you choose the services of an outsourced content writer or you prefer to produce your own website pages and blog posts, the question remains: How often should I blog?

As always, there are plenty of different factors that affect the answer to that question. In this post I've picked out a few of the most important, to help you decide.

1. Frequent updates are better

First of all, it's worth knowing that updating your website regularly with new pages, blog posts, news and PR can all help you to attract more traffic.

Each page you publish to your website has its own SEO value (search engine optimisation - getting to the top of Google's results, basically) so by publishing more updates over time, you'll build more long-term value.

You may also find that if you publish new content on a regular (and frequent) basis, your new pages get crawled and indexed faster by Google.

"If a site has important content that changes often, we crawl it often, regardless of the size."

2. Updated content looks good

It's not just about SEO value. Whether people arrive at your website via search, social media, scanning a QR code or just typing in your URL, having some updated content visible helps to keep things looking fresh.

This can be a big challenge for small business content writing, where you might feel like you don't have much to say, or like your products and services change often enough to be worth writing about.

But even publishing some informal blog posts can be a great way to make your website look 'lived in'. Otherwise, if your homepage hasn't been updated in several years, it can start to look like you've gone out of business.

3. Longer pages perform better

Google have always prioritised good-quality content in their search results, and to an extent the same principle applies to Bing and any other search engine you can think of.

While that doesn't automatically mean longer pages perform better, there is a correlation there. 'Good-quality content' is typically more in-depth, and in-depth content is typically longer.

Based on personal experience, I would say pages around 1,500 words long are in the sweet spot for good search performance, giving you plenty of words to deep-dive into your chosen topic.

4. Balance your budget

Big or small, there's always an end to the budget eventually. A good cheap content writer will give you the best value for your online marketing spend, and should be able to recommend a schedule for regular, frequent updates that falls within your budget.

Again, small business content writing can be the most challenging, as you're likely working with the tightest web marketing budget.

This is at odds with everything I've said above. A smaller budget means shorter pages, published less often. But you can still produce some good-quality content, and use your budget smartly by mixing some shorter posts in between the longer pages.

5. Think of your audience

Finally, think about the people who are likely to read your updates. Do you have an engaged audience looking for daily or weekly updates, or would your customers be overwhelmed by too many posts?

Again, this is a balancing act. A monthly in-depth newsletter, combined with shorter weekly posts and daily snippets, written with the help of an outsourced content writer, can cover all the bases without blowing your budget.

Ultimately, it's your audience who will convert into paying customers - so whatever else you decide, always put your audience first when it comes to actually writing your content.
