Press release writing is a science in itself. The audience for a press release is professional, usually short of time, and prioritises information over entertainment.
Good press release writing can help you gain brand exposure. |
A well-written press release not only increases engagement and improves your chance of being featured in local and national news or in the relevant trade press, but also prioritises the most important part of your message so that when you do get exposure, it says exactly what you want it to say.
This must all be achieved within a relatively rigid structure:
- Headline
- Date and location
- Lede (opening sentence/paragraph)
- Bullet point facts
- Quotes/comments
- Company info
- Contact details
- Notes to editors
I have been writing and working with press releases since 2006, when I joined the online news agency Adfero. Over the years I have used thousands of press releases and written a good number of them too, and I know how to present information in a way that makes the press release as useful as possible for journalists.
What you need
To get good results, you need to have something worth putting into a press release. That can be a comment on your industry, an announcement of something specific (e.g. a new product or new location) or something more general, like a "we've had a good year" kind of statement.
It's best to include 3-5 bullet points to summarise the key points. If you have any numerical data, statistics, financial results etc, that's even better, but it's not essential.
A quote or comment is a good addition too. If you'd prefer not to include one, that's fine. Or if you want me to draft a catchy comment and have you approve the wording, that's OK too.
Ultimately I want to make the process as easy as possible for you, while making sure we include as much original information and insight as we can, to maximise the value of your press release to the journalists who read it.
