Doctor Who - Time Scope edited by Matthew Rimmer

Saturday 4 July 2020

Time Scope is an unofficial and unauthorised charity e-book of short stories, poetry and art inspired by the Doctor Who universe, edited by Matthew Rimmer and featuring memories from cast and crew members who have worked on the show itself.

I know Matthew via his Who Hats account on Twitter, which catalogues every appearance of headwear in the show and is an indication of his encyclopaedic knowledge of Doctor Who.

At the start of the Coronavirus lockdown in the UK, Matthew contacted me and other fans of the show and invited us to contribute. I suggested an idea for a short story, and you can guess the rest.

This is not your standard fanfic. Matthew has worked tirelessly over the past eleven weeks to bring together fans, authors, artists and performers to create an illustrated work of fact and fiction that runs to 360 pages, not including the cover, contents and contributor biographies. The full PDF is a hefty 417 pages long and is on sale from today, July 4th 2020.

There are contributions from 114 different people, including 'incoming transmissions' from former companions such as Peter Purves (Steven Taylor), Katy Manning (Jo Grant) and Blue Peter presenter Janet Ellis, who played Teka in The Horns of Nimon.

My own addition to this line-up is a short story called The Reward, which unsurprisingly features the Tenth Doctor and an old friend, but I won't give away any more than that.

"The Doctor was tired. On the outside, he looked young. On the inside, he felt ancient. And not only because he was 906 years old. His body was dying. Yet something had kept him alive - at least long enough to collect his reward."
- The Reward, Time Scope 2020

Best of all, 100% of the profits from sales of the e-book will go to Scope which, like many charities, has been hit by a fall in fundraising during lockdown. At £6.99 for a PDF copy sent direct to your email inbox, it's a bargain for what has been a real labour of love for Matthew and all involved.

A note of thanks

On a personal note, I'd like to thank Matthew for doing this. As his introduction to the e-book says, a lot of people were at a loose end once lockdown started, whether they were out of work, furloughed, isolated from friends and family or otherwise.

Time Scope has a theme of 'connectedness' running through all the contributions. Some focus on relationships within the Doctor Who universe, such as The Doctor and his/her companions, or the companions returning to their families.

Some look at how lockdown might have affected characters from the show, creating - appropriately enough - a kind of time capsule that uniquely shows how fans think their favourite characters would be feeling in the summer of 2020.

The decision to feature all the contributors' names on the front cover is a thoughtful one, but I hope this anthology sells well more than 114 copies. And I am delighted to find myself just underneath Janet Ellis with a Dark Side of the Moon style rainbow beaming out from our names.

Time Scope is available now via Big Cartel. Matthew is handling all orders manually, so if you don't receive a PDF by email immediately, please give him some time to get it over to you!
